Sammy Sosa: Every once in a while, pro-sports bring us some good news stories. When it comes to baseball, Sammy Sosa is one of these “good news stories”. He came from a poor Dominican family, but worked hard at his trade to make a better life for himself. In baseball terms, Sammy’s numbers speak for themselves. He proved to be a dominant slugger from the latter half of the 1990s to the early 2000s. His home run battles with Mark McGwire revitalised baseball not long after a strike wiped out the World Series and left many fans disillusioned.

Sosa is part of a very elite group of baseball players who have hit more than 600 home runs in their major league careers. His 609 dingers put him fifth overall in the all time home run list, only behind Ken Griffey Jr, Willie Mays, Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron and Barry Bonds. Sammy’s career started in the Texas Rangers organization but to most, he will be best remembered for his great years as a Chicago Cub. But the way he and the team parted, as Sosa went to the Baltimore Orioles, was not the best situation. Though Sammy decided to sit out 2006 MLB season, he came back the following year to end his illustrious career in 2007 with the organization where it all started, the Texas Rangers.
