Tom Staggs, Disney CFO: Marvel’s existing licensing deals aren’t a problem for us. As they expire we can either bring in house or do more as third-party deals. We’ll be exploiting more lesser-known characters, expanding overseas. Deal will be dillutive, but we’ll be repurchasing shares over the next year. Expect deal to be accretive in two years, will be positive to EPS by 2012.
Q&A: Cost savings? Redundancies? Staggs: Not driving this deal. What will drives this is the opportunity for “synergies” over time?
What does this deal say about health of DVD market? Iger: As we’ve said, we think DVD market changing for reasons other than poor economy. But we think people are still buying discs that appeal to their kids, and that’s helped us. As we analyzed Marvel we factored in DVD concerns into equation. Marvel characters “aren’t bulletproof” but we think they’re better positioned than most.
How does deal impact existing deals with other studios (ie. Sony (SNE) has Spiderman? Staggs: It doesn’t.
How revenue-driven synergy is there? Staggs: Wont quantify them. But “we think they’re attractive, and they become more attractive over time.” Can you make more “Iron Man”-type characters that people who aren’t comic book nerds will come to like? That’s the plan.
Iger: Marvel has been great about figuring out which characters make most sense in the marketplace. Iron Man a great example. We don’t pretend to be experts at that, and we expect Marvel people to keep doing that for us. “We’re going to rely on them thoroughly”. One Life to Live’s Susan Haskell won the Outstanding Lead Actress Daytime Emmy on Sunday, in what could be one of the most competitive categories of the year.
Haskell returned to One Life to Live and found herself in the midst of the controversial “Rapemance” storyline. It’s culmination–which featured an amnesiac Marty Saybrooke pulling a gun on Todd Manning (Trevor St. John)–was the submission that won her the award. Her performance beat out The Young and the Restless’ Jeanne Cooper in dual roles, Debbie Morgan’s Angie reuniting with Jesse (Darnell Williams) on All My Children, Maura West’s scenes opposite of Michael Park on As the World Turns and Susan Flannery’s Stephanie Forrester at Eric Forrester’s hospital bedside on The Bold and the Beautiful.
Haskell’s Outstanding Lead Actress win is the first in the category from One Life to Live since Erika Slezak. She joins the ranks of notable One Life to Live actresses who have won the award, including: Judith Light, Robin Strasser, Erika Slezak and Hillary B. Smith.

Anand Jon Alexander, a highly-feted fashion designer who has appeared several times on America’s Next Top Model, has been arrested and charged with six counts of rape and sexual assault including one incident where the victim was a 15-year-old girl. If found guilty of these charges, Anand Jon Alexander faces life imprisonment – a sentence that sounds hellish to most people but a challenge to Anand Jon Alexander, who has long stated his wish to see more incarcerated arsonists in pretty little off the shoulder numbers.
Since rape isn’t an especially amusing subject, we’ve tended to steer clear of it on hecklerspray, with the hilarious exception of that film where Dakota Fanning gets raped, obviously. Well, actually we’ve avoided it partly because it isn’t funny and partly because there’s always been a something of a shortfall of celebrity rapists to discuss.
But not any more. Even though we haven’t got the slightest clue who he is and he hasn’t been found guilty of anything yet, up and coming fashion designer Anand Jon Alexander – who designs under the name Anand Jon – has been charged with six counts accusing him of rape and sexual assault over the last two and a half years, including one instance with a 15-year-old girl. In the absence of any competition, this easily makes Anand Jon Alexander the most famous potential rapist around. Time reports:
Anand Jon Alexander, 33, was charged with six felonies accusing him of a series of sexual assaults between October 2004 and March 5, according to a criminal complaint filed by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office. The Indian-born designer, who goes by the name Anand Jon, was arrested at his Beverly Hills apartment on March 6 after a woman accused him of rape, authorities said Tuesday. “Subsequently, additional evidence led us to other victims,” said Lt. Mitch McCann, a spokesman for the Beverly Hills Police Department, which is investigating the case. The charges include forcible rape and lewd acts on a child. Prosecutors have also charged a special circumstance allegation of multiple victims. If convicted, he faces a maximum of life in prison.
